The Joyce Harris-Cottman Externship Initiative
Mission Statement: The Joyce Harris-Cottman Externship Initiative is named after my great-grandmother who survived domestic abuse and became a registered nurse in 1980 -- changing our family's trajectory forever. Her story taught me that purpose and perseverance can break generational cycles, and that everyday people are the real heroes.
The JHC Externship annually provides HBCU and Minority Institution students with hands-on experience and mentorship in sports administration and athlete representation. We partner with universities to create pathways into an industry that has historically excluded people who look like us.
Because representation isn't just about who's on the court or the field. It's about who's in the front office, the boardroom, and the agent's seat. If we want equity in sports, we have to build the pipelines ourselves.
